Standard/Olympic Triathlon

The course is designed to showcase the best aspects of the Newcastle Foreshore. The Race compound and bike compound are located around Queens Wharf off Wharf Rd. This includes Sports Expo, stage and finish line. First race starts at 6.45am. Note the bike course does climb King Edward Park only 5 times and is otherwise flat or downhill.

DOMA Swim leg

1500m

Note Change to swim as at 5 Feb. The 1500m Swim will start in the water outside the Ferry Terminal at Queens Wharf. Swimmers will swim east along the edge of Queens Wharf and then be directed to follow the shoreline approx 15m off the edge. Swimmers will swim 730m east towards Nobbys Beach and then turn left and left just before the Pilot Station and return to Queens Wharf. You will exit on a scaffold ramp just east of the Wharf. Note the tide is mid tide at 6.30am and will be against you going out and with you coming back. Start times may be slightly delayed due to ship movements and if thick cloud makes visibility poor.

Cycle leg

5 x 7.4km

Competitors will pick up their bikes and head east towards Nobbys Beach along Wharf Rd. You will left turn at the entry to Horseshoe Beach car park. You will turn in the Horseshoe beach car parka dn exit the same way. You will only use this on the way out, not the way back. After this section you will then proceed along Shortland Esplanade towards Newcastle Beach. Riders should take care with the raised speed mounds along this section. Riders then continue up Shortland Espl and turn left into the old South Newcastle Beach access Rd. They then head up into King Edward Park. Once in the park the course is flat again and then climbs another 600 m to the top of the park. Cyclists then turn right onto the right hand side of The Terrace and then right onto Reserve Rd. Riders then head down Watt St and turn right at Church St onto Shortland Esplanade. (Please approach this corner with caution) They then return to the compound and then complete 4 more laps. 5 laps in total.

Run leg

4 X 2.5km

Olympic Distance Triathlon including Relay Teams complete 4 laps.

The run heads from transition and runs east the footpath of Wharf Rd and then around Camp Shortland towards the break-wall to a turn point. The run then returns to Nobbys and runs back towards Queens Wharf to a loop turn. After the correct number of laps runners run to the finish chute This run course has plenty of room and will allow good flow of competitors.
